If you think you have no numbers: calls per day, sites on your route, tonnage range, years on a brand, on-call weeks per month, the largest unit you have serviced. Pull them from old timesheets or dispatch history rather than estimating upward.

Certifications are the part of an HVAC resume most likely to be searched literally, so precision matters. Write the credential as the awarding body writes it, add the level or type, and add the year if it is current. “EPA certified” is weaker than “EPA Section 608 Universal (2019)”, which matches a keyword search and answers the follow-up question at once.

What to leave off an HVAC resume
Most advice tells you what to add. Cutting is just as valuable, because a two-page resume with a dense first half beats a three-page one a manager skims and abandons.
- A skills wall of sixty terms. Long undifferentiated lists dilute the terms you want matched and read as padding. Twelve to eighteen relevant terms do more work than sixty.
- Refrigerants and equipment you have not touched. List R-123 and you will be asked how you handle a low-pressure machine. Interviews in this trade get technical quickly.
- Graphics, columns, icons and skill rating bars. Multi-column layouts and text boxes are a common cause of a parsed resume arriving scrambled. Single column with standard headings survives.
- Van photos, tool inventories and certificate images. They add file weight, carry no searchable text, and sometimes trip attachment filters.
- Expired credentials shown as current. A lapsed state licence is worth listing only with its status stated honestly — employers verify licences.
- Full home address and personal details. City and state is enough. Date of birth, marital status and a photo slow a screen down.
Reading a posting that lists thirty requirements
Two HVAC postings with identical titles can want very different things, and that is measurable rather than a matter of opinion. In our study of 3,910 real job postings, two postings for the same job title at different companies shared a median of only 25% of their named requirements. For postings with different titles the overlap was 11.1%. The gap between those numbers is small, and it is the practical reason one “master” HVAC resume underperforms: roughly three quarters of what a given employer names is specific to that employer.
The workable response is not to rewrite the document each time. Treat the top third — summary, skills block and the bullets of your most recent role — as the adjustable part, and leave the rest stable. Three passes are usually enough:
- Find the lane. Decide which row of the specialisation table above the posting belongs to, then make sure that vocabulary appears in your first fifteen lines.
- Match the hard filters exactly. Certification type, licence class and state, years of experience and driving requirements are the items searched literally. Mirror the posting’s wording rather than a synonym.
- Name their systems. If the posting says ServiceTitan, Niagara or Metasys and you have used it, put the term in a bullet as well as the skills list. Context makes it credible; a skills list alone does not.

- Use standard section headings (“Work Experience”, “Skills”) and avoid tables, text boxes, or headers/footers that ATS parsers drop.
