Resume Keywords for a Customer Success Manager (ATS Skills List)
SaaS ATS platforms like Greenhouse and Lever screen CSM resumes for retention and expansion language, so mirror the job description. Prioritize terms like customer retention, churn reduction, onboarding, net revenue retention, and QBRs. The keyword lists below help you cover both the relationship and the revenue sides of the role.
Top ATS Keywords for a Customer Success Manager Resume
Most employers store applications in an applicant tracking system (Workday, Greenhouse, Taleo, iCIMS). The system parses your file into plain text, and a recruiter then searches that text for terms from the posting. These are the terms recruiters search for this role — work in the ones you can honestly claim.

Why These Keywords Matter for Customer Success Managers
| Keyword | Why recruiters & ATS weight it |
|---|---|
| Customer Retention | The core CSM outcome recruiters screen for; pair it with a gross retention percentage. |
| Net Revenue Retention | A top SaaS metric that proves you both keep and grow accounts, weighted heavily in senior CSM roles. |
| Churn Reduction | Signals proactive risk management, a frequent requirement in customer success job descriptions. |
| Onboarding | Shows you drive early time-to-value, which strongly predicts long-term retention. |
| Upsell and Cross-Sell | Demonstrates revenue expansion beyond renewals, valued in quota-carrying CSM roles. |
| Quarterly Business Review | A common ATS term confirming you run structured, value-based customer cadences. |
| Customer Health Score | Indicates data-driven account management and early churn detection. |
| Renewals | Directly tied to revenue; matching it improves ranking against renewal-focused postings. |
Why two Customer Success Manager postings rarely want the same thing
“Customer Success Manager” is one of the least standardised titles in software. At one company it is a renewals quota with a named book of forty mid-market accounts. At the next it is a pooled, one-to-many role that never touches a contract. At a third it is implementation work with an integration backlog attached. The keyword set that clears one of those postings looks thin against another.
That is not a hunch. In our study of 3,910 real job postings, two postings for the same job title at different companies shared a median of only 25% of their named requirements — against 11.1% for two postings with different titles. Same title, three quarters of the specifics different.
So keep a master resume carrying the terms below that you can honestly claim, then cut and re-order it per application. Work out the shape of the role first; lead with the terms that shape rewards.
The software and systems that decide Customer Success Manager screens
Recruiters do not search for “customer success platform”. They search for Gainsight, or Totango, or whichever product their own team logs into every morning. Name the products. Where you have used a competitor to the one in the posting, list yours with the category in brackets — “Catalyst (customer success platform)” — so both forms are searchable in your file.

Tool depth beats tool count: “Gainsight” in a skills list is a keyword match. “Built the risk playbook and health scorecard in Gainsight” is a screening answer. Pick two or three systems you can be interrogated about and show what you configured, reported or automated; leave the rest as a plain skills line.
Keywords by specialisation and seniority
Read the posting for its tells — book size, whether the renewal is yours, whether the word “implementation” or “API” appears — then lead your summary and top bullets with the matching column.
| If the posting is really about… | Lead with these terms |
|---|---|
| SMB or pooled books Tells: “scaled”, “one-to-many”, 150+ accounts, shared inbox | Tech-touch, digital customer success, one-to-many programmes, lifecycle email campaigns, in-app guides, playbook automation, pooled queue, self-serve adoption, time-to-first-value, Pendo, Intercom |
| Mid-market ownership Tells: named book of 25–75 accounts, “portfolio” | Account portfolio management, gross revenue retention (GRR), renewal forecasting, adoption planning, executive business review, stakeholder mapping, escalation management, success plan |
| Enterprise or strategic accounts Tells: fewer than 15 accounts, “C-suite”, “multi-stakeholder” | Strategic account planning, executive sponsorship, mutual action plan, multi-threading, steering committee, land-and-expand, procurement and legal coordination, global account governance |
| A quota-carrying, renewal-owning seat Tells: “owns the renewal”, “expansion target”, OTE quoted | Net revenue retention (NRR), gross retention, renewal rate, expansion ARR, upsell and cross-sell pipeline, forecast accuracy, commercial negotiation, price uplift, multi-year renewal, churn save |
| Onboarding and implementation Tells: “time to value”, “go-live”, “project” | Onboarding programme, implementation plan, kickoff, success criteria, data migration, integration scoping, admin training, enablement sessions, go-live, time-to-value, handover to steady state |
| A technical CSM role Tells: “API”, “SSO”, “integration”, “solutions” | REST API troubleshooting, webhooks, SSO and SAML, sandbox configuration, solution design, technical discovery, root cause analysis, engineering escalation, release readiness, bug triage |
| Customer success operations Tells: “CS Ops”, “reporting”, “health score”, “tooling” | Health score design, Gainsight administration, rules engine and playbook configuration, segmentation, book-of-business balancing, dashboard reporting, CRM data hygiene, renewal forecast hygiene |
| Senior, lead or player-coach Tells: “mentor”, “set the standard”, “dotted line” | Team leadership, coaching and mentoring, CSM onboarding and ramp, capacity planning, playbook design, QBR governance, cross-functional programme ownership, executive escalation ownership |
| Regulated or public-sector customers Tells: “HIPAA”, “SOC 2”, “FedRAMP”, “government” | HIPAA, SOC 2, GDPR, data processing agreement, security review support, audit support, contract compliance, public-sector procurement cycles, accessibility (WCAG) requirements |

Turning a keyword into a bullet someone will believe
A keyword gets you read; a bullet gets you called. Each improvement below comes from adding one of three things: a number, a named system, or a duration. Nothing else reliably separates a real CSM bullet from a job description copied out of a handbook.
| Keyword | Weak version | Version a hiring manager believes |
|---|---|---|
| Customer retention | Responsible for retention across my assigned accounts. | Held gross retention at 94% across a 48-account mid-market book (~$6.2M ARR) over eight consecutive quarters. |
| Churn reduction | Reduced churn by proactively engaging at-risk customers. | Cut logo churn from 14% to 9% in three quarters by rebuilding the at-risk playbook in Gainsight around a five-signal health score. |
| Onboarding | Onboarded new customers and ensured a smooth experience. | Redesigned the 60-day onboarding programme; median time-to-first-value fell from 47 days to 22 across 130 go-lives. |
| Upsell and expansion | Identified upsell opportunities within existing accounts. | Sourced $840K of expansion pipeline and closed $310K in seat and module upsells, lifting net revenue retention from 104% to 118%. |
| Quarterly business review | Ran QBRs with key stakeholders. | Ran 32 executive business reviews a year against a shared success plan; nine of twelve enterprise accounts added a second executive sponsor within two quarters. |
| Customer health score | Monitored account health and flagged risks to leadership. | Built the health score in ChurnZero from product usage, ticket volume, sponsor change and invoice ageing; it flagged seven of nine churn events at least 60 days ahead. |
Use your own numbers, and know where they came from. The figures above are illustrative. A CSM interview usually follows a retention claim with “how was that measured — logo or revenue, gross or net, and over what period?” If you cannot answer that, use a different number.
Certifications worth naming — and what they are actually worth
Customer success has no licence, and few postings list a credential as mandatory. Certifications earn their place for two narrower reasons: they match a term a recruiter may search, and they give a career changer something checkable to point at. Ranked by how often they carry real weight:
- Tool credentials first. A Gainsight Certified Associate or Administrator credential, or a Salesforce Certified Administrator, tends to be worth more than a general CS certificate — it maps to software the team runs daily and can be verified.
- Vendor-neutral CSM certificates. SuccessCOACHING’s CCSM levels, the Customer Success Management Professional (CCSMP) and the Practical CSM Framework certification appear regularly enough on resumes to be recognised. They read as evidence of study, not of results.
- Cisco Customer Success Manager (820-605 DTCSM). A proctored exam rather than a course completion, and it surfaces most in hardware, networking and channel-adjacent postings.
- Project credentials for implementation-heavy roles. CAPM, PMP or PRINCE2 do more for an onboarding or professional-services flavoured CSM posting than a CS certificate does.
- ITIL 4 Foundation for enterprise IT service-management customers, where the posting speaks in incident, problem and change language.
Put certifications on one line with issuer and year: Gainsight Certified Administrator (Gainsight, 2025). Study in progress belongs in that block with an expected date, not in your summary — a summary opening with a course you have not finished spends your best line on your weakest fact. No certificate outranks a retention number, so keep the credentials line short and let the bullets argue.
What to leave off a Customer Success Manager resume
Most advice only adds. These are the things that actively cost CSM candidates screens:
- Platforms you have only watched a demo of. Listing six customer success platforms invites the question “what did you build in Gainsight?” — and one hesitant answer discredits the other five in the room.
- Internal names for ordinary things. Tier labels, playbook codenames and initiative titles from your last employer mean nothing outside it, and match nothing. Translate them into industry terms: renewals, escalation path, adoption plan.
- Adjective stacks with nothing behind them. Customer-obsessed, passionate, trusted advisor, rockstar. They index, but recruiters discount them quickly — and they occupy the space a number could hold.
- Skill bars, star ratings and percentages. A parser reads “Salesforce” and drops the graphic, so you gain nothing; a human reads three stars out of five as an admission.
- Support-desk metrics in a commercial CSM application. First response time, ticket volume and SLA adherence signal a service role. Keep them only when the posting asks for them; otherwise lead with retention, adoption and expansion.
- Unexpanded acronyms on first use. NRR, GRR, QBR, TTV and ARR are normal — but write “net revenue retention (NRR)” once, because a recruiter may search either form.
- Personal details. Photo, date of birth, marital status and full home address are not expected on UK or US applications and give screeners information they should not have.
How to Place Keywords So the ATS Reads Them
- Mirror the exact wording from the job posting (both the acronym and the spelled-out term, e.g. “CRM (Salesforce)”).
- Put your strongest keywords in your summary and your two most recent roles — ATS weights recent experience.
- Add a dedicated Skills section, but also weave keywords into your bullet points so they read naturally.
- Use standard section headings (“Work Experience”, “Skills”) and avoid tables, text boxes, or headers/footers that ATS parsers drop.
- Never keyword-stuff or use white text — modern parsers and recruiters both catch it.
Put These Keywords Into Strong Bullets
Keywords get you past the filter; quantified bullets win the interview. See Customer Success Manager resume bullet examples to see these terms in action.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which keywords help a CSM resume pass ATS screening?
Customer retention, net revenue retention, churn reduction, onboarding, and upsell are the highest-value terms. Mirror the exact phrasing in the target job description.
Should I list Gainsight or Salesforce on a CSM resume?
Yes, if you have used them, because SaaS ATS filters often screen for these platforms by name. Include only tools you can discuss confidently in an interview.
Are Customer Success certifications worth adding?
Certifications like CCSM or a Gainsight Administrator credential can help you clear ATS filters and signal seriousness. List only certifications you have genuinely earned.
