Resume Keywords for an Account Executive (ATS Skills List)

Sales-org ATS platforms like Greenhouse and Lever screen AE resumes for quota and methodology language, so mirror the job description. Prioritize terms like quota attainment, pipeline generation, new business, sales cycle, and MEDDIC. The keyword lists below cover both the numbers and the sales-process side of the role.

Top ATS Keywords for an Account Executive Resume

Most employers store applications in an applicant tracking system (Workday, Greenhouse, Taleo, iCIMS). The system parses your file into plain text, and a recruiter then searches that text for terms from the posting. These are the terms recruiters search for this role — work in the ones you can honestly claim.

Why These Keywords Matter for Account Executives

KeywordWhy recruiters & ATS weight it
Quota AttainmentThe first thing sales recruiters screen for; pair it with an exact percentage to stand out.
Pipeline GenerationSignals you can self-source revenue, increasingly required as SDR support shrinks.
New BusinessDistinguishes hunters from farmers, a common ATS filter for AE hunting roles.
Sales CycleShows you understand and can compress the path to close, valued in fast-moving orgs.
MEDDICA widely required qualification methodology; matching it exactly boosts ATS ranking.
ForecastingDemonstrates predictability and CRM discipline that sales managers rely on.
Territory ManagementIndicates you can plan and grow a book strategically, not just chase leads.
NegotiationA core closing skill recruiters look for, especially in enterprise AE postings.

The sales stack that decides Account Executive screens

Sales postings name software with unusual precision, because a hiring manager wants to know how much ramp you need before you can run a deal in their system. A recruiter searching an applicant tracking system rarely types “CRM” — they type “Salesforce”, “Outreach” or “Clari”. Name the product, and the module you actually worked in. These are the platforms that appear by name in Account Executive postings, grouped by their job in the deal cycle.

Say which part you used: “Salesforce” alone is thin next to “Salesforce Sales Cloud (custom opportunity stages, CPQ quotes, forecast hygiene)”. The longer version answers the interviewer’s next question before it is asked, and still contains the exact token the parser searched for.

Account Executive keywords by segment, motion and seniority

“Account Executive” is one title covering very different jobs. A 14-day transactional SMB cycle and a nine-month enterprise pursuit both carry it, and a resume tuned for one reads as under-qualified for the other. Deal size, cycle length and who signs are the giveaways — work out which job the posting describes, then lead with the matching row.

In our study of 3,910 real job postings, two adverts for the same job title at different companies shared a median of only 25% of their named requirements — against 11.1% for postings with different titles. The title gets you into roughly the right vocabulary; the specific posting decides three-quarters of it. That is the case for re-reading the advert instead of reusing one master sales resume.

Keywords that change with the industry, not the title

Sales vocabulary is industry-coded. An advertising advert and a freight brokerage advert both say “Account Executive” while sharing few screening terms. Moving between industries, your motion transfers; the noun list has to be relearned.

Turning a keyword into a bullet a sales manager will believe

Sales hiring managers read bullets sceptically, because they have written the vague version themselves. A keyword survives that reading when it is anchored by a number, a named system, or a duration. Each rewrite below adds one.

KeywordWeak versionVersion that earns the interview
Quota attainmentConsistently exceeded quotaClosed $1.4M against a $1.2M new-business quota (117%) across four consecutive quarters
Pipeline generationResponsible for building pipelineSelf-sourced 62% of closed-won revenue through cold outbound sequences in Outreach, averaging 18 first meetings a quarter
Sales cycle managementManaged the full sales cycleCut the average mid-market cycle from 94 to 61 days by scheduling security review in the same week as the technical demo
MEDDIC / MEDDPICCUsed MEDDIC methodologyQualified deals above $50k with MEDDPICC in Salesforce, holding quarterly forecast within 8% of actuals
NegotiationStrong negotiatorNegotiated 11 multi-year MSAs with procurement and legal, keeping discount at or below the 15% approval threshold
Territory managementManaged a defined territoryRebuilt a lapsed 240-account Midwest territory in Salesforce, producing $310k from accounts dormant for 12 months

Use numbers you can defend: the figures above are illustrative. A sales interviewer will ask for the quota behind the percentage and the segment behind the ACV. A smaller true number told precisely reads stronger than a rounded one you have to walk back. To see which terms a specific posting demands that your resume is missing, run it through the free checker first.

Sales certifications and training worth naming — and what they are worth

Sales is unusual: formal certificates carry less weight here than in finance or engineering, and named methodology training carries more. Much sales training happens in-house, so a hiring manager reads a methodology name as shorthand for “has been through a structured deal review”. Recruiters do screen for these strings — name the ones you genuinely went through, and be precise about which.

  • MEDDIC and MEDDPICC — the most commonly named qualification framework in enterprise software postings. If you were trained by MEDDICC Academy, say so; if your employer ran it internally, write “trained in MEDDPICC” rather than “certified”.
  • Force Management’s Command of the Message / Command of the Sale — frequently named by enterprise SaaS employers and a strong signal for value-based selling roles.
  • Challenger, Sandler, SPIN Selling, Miller Heiman Strategic Selling — older but still screened for, particularly at large or long-established sales organisations.
  • Winning by Design — common in venture-backed SaaS, especially where the posting talks about a bow-tie funnel or recurring-revenue maths.
  • Salesforce Certified Administrator — a real certificate with a verifiable ID. Worth naming for roles that mention CRM ownership, RevOps collaboration or a messy pipeline to clean up.
  • Product and platform credentials — HubSpot Sales Software certification, AWS Cloud Practitioner for co-sell and marketplace roles, Google Ads or Analytics for media sales. Cheap to earn, and screened for by name in those industries.
  • Industry access requirements — medical device vendor credentialing, or a state licence for insurance and financial products. There the credential is often a hard filter, so it belongs high on the page.

Put credentials where the parser expects them: a clear “Certifications” or “Training” heading with the issuing body and the year. Buried in a summary sentence, they are easy for a keyword search to miss.

What to leave off an Account Executive resume

Most keyword advice only adds. Cutting is the faster win here, because the material below either is not searched for or invites a question you would rather not answer.

  • The adjective stack. “Hunter mentality”, “go-getter”, “self-starter”, “results-driven”. Recruiters do not search these strings, and they displace lines that could carry a number.
  • Attainment with no quota attached. “140% of target” against an unnamed number invites a discount, not a call. Give the quota, the segment and the period.
  • A wall of client logos with no deal context. One or two named accounts with the deal size beats a dozen names that could each have been a $3k renewal.
  • Methodologies you were never trained in. MEDDIC on the page means a MEDDIC-shaped interview question about your last deal’s economic buyer and decision criteria.
  • Tools you touched once. A hiring manager who lives in Gong will ask how you used it. The keyword gains less than the credibility costs.
  • SDR-era activity metrics, once you are a few years in. Dials per day belong on a first AE resume or a velocity-role application, not on one that should now be arguing revenue and win rate.
  • Skill-rating bars, star ratings and rings. A parser reads them as images, so the skill inside can be dropped entirely — and a self-assigned “9/10 in negotiation” persuades nobody.
  • An objective statement, a photograph and a full street address. None is searched for. Spend the space on a summary carrying your segment, ACV range and methodology.

How to Place Keywords So the ATS Reads Them

  • Mirror the exact wording from the job posting (both the acronym and the spelled-out term, e.g. “CRM (Salesforce)”).
  • Put your strongest keywords in your summary and your two most recent roles — ATS weights recent experience.
  • Add a dedicated Skills section, but also weave keywords into your bullet points so they read naturally.
  • Use standard section headings (“Work Experience”, “Skills”) and avoid tables, text boxes, or headers/footers that ATS parsers drop.
  • Never keyword-stuff or use white text — modern parsers and recruiters both catch it.

Put These Keywords Into Strong Bullets

Keywords get you past the filter; quantified bullets win the interview. See Account Executive resume bullet examples to see these terms in action.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which keywords help an AE resume pass ATS screening?

Quota attainment, pipeline generation, new business, sales cycle, and your methodology like MEDDIC are the highest-value terms. Mirror the exact wording used in the job description.

Should I list sales tools like Salesforce, Outreach, and Gong?

Yes, when you have used them, because sales-org ATS filters often screen for these platforms by name. Include only tools you can speak to in an interview.

Do sales methodology certifications like MEDDIC or Sandler help?

Yes, naming a recognized methodology you were trained in signals process discipline and can clear ATS filters. List only methodologies you were genuinely trained on.
